THE MATH
How a dive gets its score
Each judge awards the dive from 0 to 10 in half points, looking at the approach, the takeoff, the flight and the entry. They are not scoring how hard the dive was. That part is handled by the degree of difficulty.
With a panel of five, the highest and lowest awards are thrown out and the middle three are added together. With seven judges, the two highest and two lowest go. With three, all three count. That sum is multiplied by the DD and you have the dive score.
So a 2.0 DD dive with 6.5, 6.5 and 6.5 counting is 39.00. A 3.0 DD dive with 5.0, 5.0 and 5.0 counting is 45.00. That gap is the whole strategy of diving in one sentence: difficulty pays, right up until it stops being clean.
What do I need?
Put a target score in the box under the running total. Leave the awards blank on the dives still to come but give them a DD, and the calculator tells you the average award those dives need. Coaches use this to decide whether to play the last dive safe or go for it. Parents use it to know whether to start cheering.
Meets can run different panel sizes and some formats round or weight differently. Official results come from the meet referee, not from this page. Do not know the DD? Look up the dive code.
